Thus, The Fall of the House of Usher (premiering October 12)—an Edgar Allan Poe mega-mashup that chronicles the operatic downfall of a big pharma family, done in by a terrible curse of their own making. Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her. It was shortly after this that Auggie arrived at the house to hear Roderick's confession. Only, as evidenced by the noises coming from the basement, Madeline wasn't quite dead. While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal.

Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. The eldest of the Usher “bastards,” Victorine has made helping people her life’s work, but like her siblings, the true source of her ambition is her desire for her father’s approval and affection. After Roderick shows interest in Victorine’s revolutionary new heart technology — still in its testing phase — Victorine bends the rules of clinical trials to start testing on human subjects. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault.
Storyline
The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. Porn legend John Holmes was implicated in the 1981 lead pipe Wonderland Avenue murders of four known drug-dealing thieves in this house. Since The Haunting of Hill House debuted in 2018, Mike Flanagan has steadily built up an impressively diverse anthology of limited series on Netflix, with releases coming on a near-annual basis. The intervening years have included a romantic puzzle box, a small-town vampire story, and a collection of teen ghost stories. But with The Fall of the House of Usher — which is likely the final collaboration between Flanagan and Netflix — the showrunner has created his most ambitious story yet.

The Last Supper display seems to attract the most paranormal attention, including a simple woman who is seen silently praying at the bench in front. In 1932, Peg Entwshile, a moderately successful actress, decided to end her life by jumping off the top of the H. Joggers and hikers now claim to see a blond woman who appears to be walking on air and smell the strong fragrance of gardenias as they pass by. The song Roderick sings, “The Haunted Palace,” is an extended metaphor that compares the mind of a mad person to a haunted house or a palace under siege. This metaphor is representative of Roderick’s own mental deterioration.
Although the building was remodeled in 2011 and now serves as apartments for seniors, the ghost stories still persist. However, the house still stands at 8763 Wonderland Avenue and some people believe that the ghost of John Holmes continues to haunt the house. At Roderick’s words, the door bursts open, revealing Madeline all in white with blood on her robes. With a moan, she falls on her brother, and, by the time they hit the floor, both Roderick and Madeline are dead. Outside, he looks back just in time to see the house split in two and collapse.

A “playboy” with a drug for every occasion, Leo welcomes the ability to numb the pain of his reality, but his drug use has started to become a problem for his boyfriend, Julius. And that's what makes this series so fantastic and scary at the same time. Death was coming for them, and the Usher twins believed that what happened that night was not real and that this was just some ploy. But when the children started to get killed off, one by one, it sank in even deeper that this was very real, and Death was coming for them.
The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good. But deep down, during each of their episodes, we would get to know them and see some human underneath and that they have severely flawed issues from their childhood. Most of them lacked a father figure growing up; many are illegitimate children treated like garbage by the ones that were Roderick's from his marriage – there are plenty of reasons why they acted out. Even if it had a bit of a slow beginning for me, I truly trusted Mike Flanagan to produce a series that would knock my socks off, so I kept watching.
And what made it even more horrifying is that they just kept getting worse as time passed. I'm not entirely sure why – it could be because they were never gory or scary enough for me. The only one that genuinely stopped my heart was Nell's death in The Haunting of Hill House, which was so sad and a good twist. I am a part of a generation of young adults who grew up with death, gore, and guts in most of my favorite TV shows.
